Construct Name: Comorbidity
Definition of Construct: This interview measure of comorbidity computes the total number of comorbid illnesses by taking into account both the number and the severity of the illness. It is based on and uses the same scoring algorithm as the Charlson Index. The Charlson Index was developed empirically based on assessments of the relative risk of death associated with several medical conditions (Charlson ME, Pompei P, Ales K, MacKenzie CR. A new method of classifying prognostic comorbidity in longitudinal studies: Development and validation. J Chronic Dis 1987; 40:373-383).

The definition given above does not define the construct; rather it assumes that the reader already knows what is meant by "comorbid illnesses."
